About Black Cat Names
Black cat names lean mysterious, magical, and dark. From Shadow and Binx to Onyx and Midnight, these names embrace the dark beauty of black-coated cats and their association with mystery and elegance.
Black cat names work best when they embrace the dark coat rather than ignoring it. Shadow, Onyx, Midnight, and Raven all draw from the visual reality of a black cat. The name becomes an extension of the cat's appearance, creating a cohesive identity.
Pop culture has a strong influence on black cat names. Binx (from Hocus Pocus), Salem (from Sabrina), and Vader (from Star Wars) are all popular choices. These names carry built-in personality -- Binx is loyal and mysterious, Salem is magical and sassy, Vader is powerful and dark.
Mythology is another rich source. Nyx (Greek goddess of night), Hecate (goddess of magic), and Eclipse all draw from the association between black cats and the mystical. These names give your cat a story, not just a sound, and they suit the mysterious, independent personality that black cats are known for.

Black Cat Names FAQ
What are the best names for black cats?
The best black cat names embrace the dark coat. Shadow, Binx, Onyx, Midnight, and Raven are all top choices. Pop culture names like Binx (Hocus Pocus) and Salem (Sabrina) are especially popular, as are mythology names like Nyx (goddess of night).
Are black cat names only dark and mysterious?
No. While dark names are the most popular, black cats also suit food names (Licorice, Espresso), nature names (Raven, Ash), and even bright, ironic names (Snowball, Ghost). The key is choosing a name that fits your cat's personality, not just their coat.
Is it bad luck to name a black cat something dark?
Not at all. Embracing the dark, mysterious aesthetic of black cats is a celebration of their beauty, not a superstition. Names like Shadow, Onyx, and Midnight are popular because they are elegant and fitting, not because of any association with bad luck.
